Ruinsara Lake Trek May 14-22, 2010

The Tons valley, is situated in the western ranges of the Garhwal Himalaya in Uttaranchal amidst thick deodar and pine forest and is a relatively unspoilt area. The Ruinsara Lake is a secluded serene haven surrounded by glittering peaks. Being part of the Govind Vihar sanctuary the area is rich in wildlife and is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers. The  villages along the  way have very distinctive  wooden  carvings  adorning their houses. This route is associated with the epic Mahabharata, whose heroes are said to have roamed this area during their fourteen  years of exile.

TRIP ITINERARY:

 

May 14 o/n-May 22 / Jun 18 o/n-Jun 26, 2010

 

Day 00: Overnight train to Dehradun

 

Board the Overnight Mussoorie Express leaving Old Delhi Railway station at 10:15 pm

 

Day 01: Delhi to Lunagad Camp (1120m) Overnight train and 6 hrs drive.

Arrive at Dehradun 0745 hrs on board the overnight Mussourie Express. You will board waiting vehicles and drive to Camp Lunagad in time to arrive for lunch by 2pm. Welcome drink over camp briefing, check into tents and relax. 

Day 02: Lunagad to Gangar (1950m). 2-3 hrs drive and trek 3-4 hrs.

 

Drive from Camp to Taluka, enroute stop at Saur village, one of the most impressive villages of the area with intricately carved wooden houses and the village temple. Continue drive till Taluka and trek 3-4hrs along the river bed and through the forest to campsite just beyond the village of Gangar. Overnight Camp.

 

Day 03: Gangar to Dev Thach (3000m) 4-5 hrs

 

Trek to Dev Thach a large alpine meadow. The path continues winding through the forest until the village of Osla appears on the opposite side of the valley. The main trail does not divert to Osla. Instead it leads through a row of teashops and a forest rest house known as Seema (2500m). From here its an hours walk up to the beautiful meadow. Overnight camp.

 

Day 04: Dev Thach to Ruinsara Lake (3350m) 3-4 hrs

 

The trail leads through mixed forest and meadows of forget-me-nots and buttercups. Halfway to the lake, the valley widens and crosses a series of flowered meadows where shepherds from the nearby villages graze their flocks in the summer. Ruinsara Lake is considered sacred by the surrounding villages. It is above the main valley floor on the true side, surrounded by alpine pastures and low rhododendrons beneath the impressive Swargarohini Range.Camp.

 

Day 05: Ruinsara Lake to Dev Thach (3000m) 2-3 hrs

 

A day to laze around and appreciate the magnificent view of the snow-clad peaks of the Swargarohini or  walk towards the base camp of Banderpunch Peak to catch a close-up of the magnificent mountain. Return to camp for hot lunch and move to Dev Thach. 

 

Day 06:  Dev Thach to Lunagad (1120m) 6-7 hrs and drive 2 hrs.

Trek from Dev Thach to the road head at Taluka. Drive to Camp at Lunagad. 

Day 07: Lunagad to Delhi

Optional early rafting trip to soothe the aching muscles. Transfer to Dehradun to board the Shatabdi Express back to Delhi. Reach Delhi 10:40pm
